Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Best Shakedown 4-6-82?

I've never heard Jerry and Brent do an extended call-and-response like on this version. It starts with one bar each, then Jerry switches it to two bars. Funky and thoroughly enjoyable. Finally after about 2 min, Jerry cuts it off and starts the "regular" part of the jam that blows away most other versions. It's long enough to be a complete Shakedown jam on its own.

There's one of my favorite Spaces on this one, too. Come to think of it, the entire second set kills. One of my favs from the 80's.

good one, but not the best...04-17-1982 is another interesting one from that period...

As far as the best versions...06-30-1985, 12-05-1979, 05-16-1981, 12-31-1984, 08-27-1981 is a good list to start with...

All good suggestions, but for me, 12/28/78 takes the Shakedown prize. Supremely, supremely funky. Everything just clicks. Phil is dropping great bombs, Bob's chords are perfectly wah-wah'ed, and Jerry's Mutron is smoking. Even Keith's piano comping is spot on. Check it out.

I'm familiar with 12-31-84, and just checked out 6/30/85, thanks for the suggestion. That one definitely has the X factor. But I'd put 4-6-82 up with either of them.

4/6 is my favorite as well. jerry kills it. very funky. 6/30/85 has that nice ascending synth/guitar moment at the end of the jam (which is awesome), and there are plenty of other good versions, but i just love some of jerry's runs from philly so much. am not familiar with some of stratocaster's picks though- will have to check them out.

i just listened to almost every suggestion. The 26 hour shakedown marathon. I found my personal favorites in

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1979-01-10.sony-senn.wagner.miller.113114.flac16
1-10-79 serious low down funky, an early version with keith in the lineup, excellent work by the drummers laying a very hypnotic beat. the darkstar is nicely developed ad well.
12-31-84 bright-fast Jerry leads, never remembered that version but wow

Other very honorable mentions
5-8-81 bluesy
8-28-81 damn good

Other notes
4-6-82 has the longest exchange between Jerry and Brent who 'follows' the guitar licks for several minutes, back and forth
6-30-85 matrix has the deepest phil

Not on the list but very nice
10-30-80 youtube video
7-5-81 an utterly unique take on the song as the band is playing a different melody than the usually theme, very very bluesy guitar lead

-----

Any 87-91 reccomendations ?

I 2nd the 7/5/81 recommendation. It's not the "best ever", but it is in the realm of "most interesting" versions.

Linky-dinky-doo....

Disclaimer: Best = Personal Preference.

4/6/82 has a few of my bests: Morning Dew, 2nd-verse-only Other One, Shakedown, Sailor>Saint, and overall 'being there' experience.

1/10/79 extended ultra-gritty, bluesy Jerry jam. Flawless rendition.

11/29/79 If you like Brent-heavy, this is another beauty. Jerry goes all wah-wah on this one.
